The Boltons' grand Italianate villas were built in the 1850s and 1860s and represent the high-water mark of mid-Victorian domestic architecture in Chelsea. Heritage painting in these properties involves the conservation of richly decorated interiors—deep-coved cornices, elaborate ceiling roses, carved stone chimneypieces, and the heavy panelled doors typical of the period. Many houses retain their original entrance-hall schemes of deep reds, ochres, and dark greens, reflecting the Victorian taste for saturated colour. Over the decades, some of these interiors have been painted over in uniform magnolia, erasing the visual drama the architects intended.
