The decorating notebook

Planning a cabinet repaint

Repainting can be discussed once the cabinet material, condition and existing finish are understood. Suitability needs assessment.

Identify the material

Timber, MDF, laminate and factory coatings should not be assumed to accept the same preparation. Check damaged edges, loose components and grease around handles. Repairs or replacement parts may be needed before any coating work.

Agree a sample and method

Discuss a test area and the intended appearance. Brush and spray application have different access and protection requirements. The quote should say which doors, drawer fronts, fixed panels and internal faces are included, and who removes or refits hardware.

Arrange use of the kitchen

Plan around appliances, food storage and access to water. Agree drying arrangements and follow the chosen coating’s curing guidance before cleaning or handling it normally. Retain the product references and discuss care of frequently touched edges.
