Farrow & Ball paints have specific application requirements that differ from conventional products. Their high pigment load means surface preparation must be exceptionally thorough — any crack, dent, or imperfection in the substrate will be emphasised rather than concealed. We prepare surfaces to a higher standard than for conventional paints, with multiple rounds of filling, sanding, and priming to achieve a flawless base. We apply primers from the Farrow & Ball system where specified, or compatible high-quality primers for challenging surfaces. For walls, we use medium-pile microfibre rollers that produce the smooth, even finish Farrow & Ball recommends — avoiding long-pile rollers that create excessive stipple. For woodwork, we use high-quality synthetic brushes that lay off Farrow & Ball's oil-based and water-based woodwork finishes beautifully. Each finish type demands a specific approach: Estate Emulsion requires two full coats applied evenly without overworking; Modern Emulsion benefits from three thinner coats for optimal washability; Dead Flat needs careful, even application to avoid sheen variation. We maintain consistent ambient temperature and ventilation during application, as Farrow & Ball finishes are sensitive to drying conditions.
