Colour Range
**Farrow & Ball:** 150+ colours, updated regularly. Strengths in muted, complex tones. Colours often have evocative names and backstories. Their neutrals are legendary.
**Little Greene:** 200+ colours, many researched from historical archives. Strengths in historically accurate period colours. Their Colours of England range is particularly well-suited to Georgian and Victorian properties.
Formulation & Performance
**Farrow & Ball:** High pigment content creates exceptional colour depth. Estate Emulsion has a beautiful chalky finish but marks more easily. Modern Emulsion offers better durability. Coverage is good but can require 3 coats on certain colours.
**Little Greene:** Their Intelligent range uses water-based alkyd technology — washable, durable, and with excellent flow. Generally covers in 2 coats. Their Intelligent Eggshell for woodwork is outstanding.
Durability
Little Greene's Intelligent range has an edge in durability, particularly in high-traffic areas. Farrow & Ball's Modern Emulsion has improved significantly but Little Greene remains slightly more robust in our experience.
Price
Both are premium brands. At current prices, they're comparable per litre, with Little Greene sometimes slightly less expensive. Given that Little Greene typically requires fewer coats, the overall project cost can be marginally lower.
Our Recommendation
For Chelsea period homes, both are excellent choices. We slightly favour Farrow & Ball for its colour depth in reception rooms and heritage feel, and Little Greene for its durability in kitchens, hallways, and children's rooms. Many Chelsea homeowners use both in the same property.
