The Best Time of Year to Paint Your Chelsea Property

Published 15 April 2025

Timing matters in painting — more than most Chelsea homeowners realise. Exterior paint applied in the wrong conditions will fail prematurely. Interior projects scheduled without thought to drying times, ventilation, and household routines create unnecessary disruption. And booking at the wrong time of year means either long waits or paying a premium for availability.

After decades of painting Chelsea properties, we have a clear picture of the seasonal rhythms that should inform your planning. Here is our month-by-month guide.

Spring: March to May

Exterior Spring is the ideal season to begin exterior painting in Chelsea. By late March, daytime temperatures are reliably above the 10°C minimum required by most masonry paints for proper curing. The days are lengthening, giving productive working hours from 8am to 6pm. Rainfall is typically moderate, with enough dry spells to allow scaffold work to proceed.

April and May are our busiest months for scaffold erection on Chelsea's stucco fronts. The terraces along Redcliffe Gardens, Beaufort Street, and the garden squares are draped in scaffolding as homeowners take advantage of the season. If you want exterior work completed before summer, book by January at the latest.

**Key consideration:** Late frosts can catch out early-season exterior work. We monitor Met Office forecasts closely and will not apply masonry paint if overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below 5°C within 48 hours of application. Paint that freezes before curing will powder and peel.

Interior Spring is excellent for interior painting. Moderate temperatures allow good drying without the extremes of summer heat or winter cold. Windows can be opened for ventilation without freezing the household. If you are planning a full interior redecoration of a Chelsea terrace, spring offers the best balance of working conditions and availability.

Summer: June to August

Exterior The prime exterior painting season. Long days, warm temperatures, and statistically the driest months make summer ideal for stucco fronts, external woodwork, and metalwork. However, extreme heat (above 30°C) can cause problems — masonry paint may dry too quickly on sun-baked south-facing facades, preventing proper film formation. On very hot days, we schedule south-facing work for the morning and switch to shaded elevations in the afternoon.

Summer is also peak season for Chelsea's painters, and lead times reflect this. Expect 6 to 8 weeks from enquiry to start date for exterior projects booked in May or June. The most in-demand Chelsea painting firms are fully committed through the summer by Easter. Early booking is essential.

**Chelsea-specific note:** Summer coincides with the social season — Chelsea Flower Show in May, Royal Ascot in June, various garden parties and events through July. Many Chelsea clients prefer exterior scaffold work to be completed before the social calendar heats up, adding further pressure to the spring booking window.

Interior Summer interior painting works well from a technical standpoint — fast drying times, good ventilation, long working days. However, many Chelsea families are away during August (in the South of France, Cornwall, or further afield), making this an excellent time for a full interior repaint of an empty house. We recommend this approach for comprehensive projects: leave the keys with us, go on holiday, and return to a freshly decorated home.

Autumn: September to November

Exterior Early autumn — September and the first half of October — offers a final window for exterior painting. Temperatures remain adequate, and September is often one of London's driest months. We frequently complete stucco front projects that ran over from the summer schedule in September.

By late October, the window closes. Shorter days, falling temperatures, and increasing rainfall make exterior painting unreliable. Any exterior work still in progress by early November should be concluded or weatherproofed and left until spring.

**Metalwork exception:** External metalwork (railings, gates, balcony balustrades) can be painted slightly later into autumn than masonry, as metal surfaces dry faster and the paint products used on metal are less temperature-sensitive than masonry coatings. We will paint Chelsea railings into early November if conditions allow.

Interior Autumn is our recommended season for interior painting if you want maximum availability and minimum disruption. The summer rush has subsided, lead times are shorter (typically 2 to 4 weeks), and working conditions are ideal. Chelsea homeowners returning from summer breaks often book autumn interior projects to refresh their homes for the winter season.

The one caveat is heating. By October, Chelsea homes are running their central heating, and freshly painted radiators in particular must be left off for 24 hours after painting to allow the paint to cure without yellowing. We schedule radiator painting to minimise the impact on household heating.

Winter: December to February

Exterior We do not paint building exteriors in Chelsea during winter. Temperatures are too low for reliable paint curing, daylight hours are insufficient, and the risk of rain, frost, and damp conditions is too high. Any exterior painting company offering to paint your Chelsea stucco front in January should be viewed with scepticism.

The one exception is emergency repairs — stabilising a blown render patch or recoating a section where water ingress is occurring. These are temporary measures to protect the building until proper work can be done in spring.

Interior Winter is underrated for interior painting. Chelsea's painters have more availability between December and February, and keen negotiators may find better rates during the quiet season. Heated rooms (above 15°C) with reasonable ventilation provide perfectly adequate conditions for interior painting.

The challenge is ventilation. Modern low-VOC paints produce minimal odour, but some ventilation is still needed for proper drying. In the depths of a Chelsea winter, opening windows for extended periods is impractical. We use dehumidifiers and air movers to manage drying in cold-weather interior projects, and we schedule work to allow adequate drying time between coats — typically overnight rather than the same-day second coat that summer conditions allow.

**Christmas and New Year:** We do not work between Christmas Eve and the second of January. If you want a project completed before Christmas entertaining, work must begin by late November for a typical Chelsea terrace room. Plan accordingly.

Booking Lead Times

Here is what to expect when contacting us at different times of year for a Chelsea painting project:

  • **January/February:** 2-3 week lead time for interior work. Ideal time to book spring/summer exterior work.
  • **March/April:** 3-4 week lead time. Exterior schedule filling rapidly.
  • **May/June:** 6-8 week lead time for exterior. 3-4 weeks for interior.
  • **July/August:** Summer schedule largely committed. Interior slots available, especially August.
  • **September/October:** 2-4 week lead time. Excellent availability for interior projects.
  • **November/December:** 2-3 week lead time for interior. Last chance to book pre-Christmas completion.

Planning Your Project

Our recommendation for Chelsea homeowners planning a significant painting project:

1. **Make initial contact 3-6 months before your preferred start date** for exterior work, or 6-8 weeks for interior work. 2. **Book a survey visit** — we assess the property, discuss your requirements, and prepare a detailed quotation. 3. **Allow 2-4 weeks for colour selection.** If using a colour consultant (we can recommend several who specialise in Chelsea period properties), book them before confirming your painting dates. 4. **Confirm your booking** with a deposit to secure your dates. Peak season dates that are not confirmed will be offered to other clients. 5. **Prepare the property** — clear rooms, remove fragile items, and ensure access is available for the scheduled period.

The best-run Chelsea painting projects are the ones planned well in advance. Rushed bookings lead to compromised schedules, limited colour choices, and unnecessary stress. Give yourself and your painters the time to do the job properly.
